- “Problems with your bike? Just a second!”
With an average of 10-15 cases per day or days with a peak of 60-70 cases, the Hanoi Rescue Team (HRT) now has been dedicating to the society through their rescue journey every day. The call on the street “Reng…Reng… Hello, this is the Ha Noi Rescue Team. Do you have any motorcycle problems?...Where is your location now?” - From 9 pm to 1 am on a daily basis, those familiar lines are resounded again. Six years have passed since its first establishment, Ha Noi Rescue Team has gained the public trust and credibility for their kindness and compassion. According to Mr. Quyen - the leader of the team, his decision to set up the team is because it is more difficult for road traffic participants to find help at a late-night time if they have motorcycle trouble. After a period of operation, the team has attracted quite a few like-minded people from different occupations, including students, workers and so on. With their passion and enthusiasm, Ha Noi Rescue Team has helped many cases since 2016. The wheels rolling to save people at midnight At 9:22 p.m., the Ha Noi Rescue Team gathered around a sidewalk iced tea at the intersection of Khuat Duy Tien Street in a ready-to-rescue position when a phone call came in. As quick as a flash, the leader of the HRT divided the members into two small groups to prepare rescue equipment and start their journey to help those in need. The rescue group arrived at Tran Thai Tong Street in Cau Giay, where a student from the Academy of Finance required assistance. She had a severely damaged tire puncture. After carefully inquiring about the motorcycle problem that the student encountered while driving, the Team members effectively collaborated to solve the problem so that the student could return home early. The Hanoi Rescue Team has experienced several difficulties on their path to assisting others; nevertheless, their motivation outweighs everything else. “Be kind to receive kindness” Founded in 2016, the Hanoi Rescue Team has saved countless victims from motorbike breakdowns and received gratitude from them. However, the cost of maintaining operations and human resources are the obstacles that the HRT has to face. Since Mr. Quyen and the members of the HRT work in many different professions, such as technological driver, receptionist, salesman, etc., the finance of the HRT is very tight. With a meager income, the whole team still contributes monthly funds to buy repair tools to support the motorbike repair. Mr. Quyen said: "Currently, the HRT is fortunate because after deploying the HRT's fund, the Hanoi Rescue Team has received a lot of help and support from everyone." Mr. Hieu, a victim of a motorcar breakdown in the middle of the night, confided: "During a motorbike puncture at night, I was given the HRT's contact number and received help from them. Since then, I have known and decided to join the Hanoi Rescue Team. I just want to help others, and I don't need anything in return. Do good deeds to reap good deeds.” As one of the members who has been with the team for a long time, Mr. Quang shared his reason for sticking with HRT after finishing a motorbike puncture case: "With the spirit of working for free, I'm delighted when I can put in my effort and do something useful for people surrounds." HRT's members are fixing the punctured tire (Credit: Le Trésor) Appreciations N.L., a student who had a motorbike breakdown in the middle of the road at late night on November 10th and received assistance from the Hanoi rescue team, shared: “When I called this number, I was very surprised because one of the Hanoi rescue team members answered the phone and asked clearly the address and condition of my motorbike. After I told him briefly, he said that he was ready to come instantly. The distance between Ha Dong to Tran Thai Tong is quite long, and after my motorbike was repaired, I was also astonished that this was a free campaign.” Gratitude, appreciation and surprise are emotions that the majority of people in distress who are helped by the Hanoi rescue team. - Hurricane Ian's death toll climbs above 100 in Florida alone
By AFP October 11, 2022 | 09:28 am GMT+7 The death toll from Hurricane Ian, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States, soared above 100 in Florida alone on Monday, officials said. Homes, restaurants and businesses were ripped apart when Ian roared ashore as a powerful Category 4 hurricane on September 26. Boats and damaged houses are seen on October 1, 2022 in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in San Carlos Island, Florida. Photo by AFP/Giorgio Viera The confirmed number of storm-related fatalities rose to 102 statewide, the Florida Medical Examiners Commission confirmed in its latest report, with the majority located in the state's southwest. Another five people died in North Carolina, the state's governor has previously reported. After making landfall, Ian passed over Florida and into the Atlantic Ocean before heading ashore again, this time on the South Carolina coast. Officials have said it could take months -- and perhaps $50 billion or more -- to rebuild Florida's devastated coastal zones. Vietnam utterly dominates Thailand in youth football By Hoang Nguyen, VNExpress October 12, 2022 | 10:04 am GMT+7 Thailand players (L) in the 0-3 defeat against Vietnam in the U17 Asian Cup qualifiers in Viet Tri Stadium in the northern province of Phu Tho, October 9, 2022. Photo by VnExpress/Lam Thoa In the last five years Thailand have not been able to beat Vietnam at the youth level after 17 attempts. The 0-3 loss in the last match in group F at the U17 Asian Cup qualifiers on Sunday in fact marked the 17th attempt. Their last win came in the 2017 SEA Games when the two nations’ U22 teams clashed and Vietnam lost 0-3 to crash out early. Since then Thailand’s U16, U17, U19, and U23 teams have failed to repeat the feat. In 2022 they have lost to Vietnam six times and drew once. Thailand head coach Pipob On Mo said after the match Sunday: “It’s true that we are facing problems in finding young new talent. But we acknowledge that and will find a way.” In 2022 Vietnam have also dominated the Thai women, beating them at the 2023 Women’s World Cup playoff, the SEA Games final and the U19 Women’s AFF Championships. Thai newspaper Siam Sport said: “2022 may be the first year in history that Thailand cannot beat Vietnam in any football match. It is an alarming situation.” Vietnam and Thailand may play each other again at the end of this year in the 2022 AFF Cup. Hand models share behind-the-scenes secrets to entering profession By Minh Tam October 9, 2022 | 04:55 pm GMT+7 Hand models can make several million Vietnamese dong an hour without having to worry about their appearance or spending time applying makeup like regular models. At the end of her last photoshoot in September, which lasted 12 hours, Vong Dinh Y sat down to massage her tired hands. “Two years ago, when I was working as a promotion girl, many people praised me for having beautiful hands and asked me why I didn’t do hand modeling. I tried it once and fell in love with the profession,” the 21-year-old native of central Binh Thuan Province said. At the time, Dinh Y was an accounting student at a university in Ho Chi Minh City. At first, she thought this was just a side hustle and only worked part-time to earn some extra money. However, when she entered the profession and became passionate, she decided to make it her full-time career. Be a model without revealing your face, earn millions thanks to “acting hands”. Video of BaoThanhnien Most of her contracts involve modeling for jewelry products, which requires precision movements as directed by the photographer. “The most difficult thing is making your hands express different moods, suited to different jobs or contexts,” she revealed. For example, when shooting and filming with food, she needs to express hand motions that show she is someone who often goes to the kitchen and has great cooking skills. Dinh Y reveals that her first ever hand model job was for a foreign nail brand. At the time, she took a photo of her hand, didn’t need to edit it, and sent it to the recruiter for immediate approval. From her first job working for VND50,000 ($2.09) an hour, until now, Dinh Y’s remuneration has jumped to about VND500,000-1 million per hour. For difficult projects, the rate can reach VND5 million per hour. “Hand modeling is a recent development in Vietnam, especially in the fields of jewelry, cosmetics, nails,” she said. Thanks to her efforts to build an image on social networks along with her experience in shooting in many locations, Dinh Y admits she has a very good income. According to statistics from International Modeling Association, hand modeling generates a very high income. A professional model can earn $13,000 for two hours working for a famous brand. Dinh Y strikes a pose with her hands during a photoshoot. Photo courtesy of Y Dinh Y said a standard hand must be nearly perfect, that is, without any defects like scars, moles, wrinkles or tattoos. In addition, the skin of the hands should be smooth, without showing blue veins. “The shape of the hands must be innately beautiful, but to have smooth and white skin, it must be taken care of,” she said. To prepare for a shoot, her usual routine is exfoliation, manicures, hand waxing, cleansing, and cream. When shooting, she always has to use sunscreen to protect the skin from the light of the flash. “Many people think that modeling is a leisurely pursuit but the reality is the complete opposite,” said Phan Thuy, 23, from HCMC’s Binh Thanh District, who has been doing this job for more than three years. There are times when she must work long hours, even two days in an air-conditioned room, having to apply many different cosmetics. In order to create a satisfactory and standard photo, the model has to hold the product up high for a long time, resulting in cramps and stiff tendons. Since her hands are an important part of Thuy’s work, she sometimes takes a few months off work to take care of the skin on her hands, which peels and wrinkles due to the weather. Besides the hard work, Thuy thinks hand modeling is very interesting and fun. “My body can show all kinds of weird poses, but no one notices,” the girl from Gia Lai Province said. Phan Thuy poses for a photo with a calabash. Photo courtesy of Thuy Like many other professions, according to her, hand modeling is divided into many fields and has different requirements. Because it is about beauty, it is required that the model’s hands be slim, long, white, smooth and have few defects. Nails are also quite important; customers often prefer solid nails with rectangular molds rather than raft or square ones. “My hands still have moles and show a few veins. However, most customers who come to me prioritize the hand appearance first. Faults on the skin can be quickly fixed by using concealer,” she said. The biggest thing Thuy has gained after three years in the profession is a new experience. “This is a profession that I enjoy doing. The important thing is that I get to interact with many brothers and sisters in the artistic field and also staff behind the scenes,” Thuy confided.

Photo by VnExpress/Nguyen Dong Luxury tour operator Unforgettable Croatia has listed Hoi An in its list of world’s most colorful places based on Tripadvisor reviews. With 1,105 reviews commenting on its colors, Hoi An ranked third on the list after Nyhavn in Denmark with 2,755 reviews and Chihuly Garden and Glass in the U.S. with 1287 reviews, according to data collected last July by the London-based tour opeprator. Hanoians stock up on gasoline fearing shortages By Anh Minh, Anh Tu, VNExpress October 12, 2022 | 11:01 am GMT+7 People gather at a gas station on Nguyen Phong Sac Street of Cau Giay District in Hanoi to buy gasoline for their motorbikes on October 11, 2022. Photo by VnExpress/Tu Anh Hanoians besieged gas stations Tuesday night fearing that the fuel shortage that has hit Vietnam is likely to worsen. At 9 p.m. on Tuesday Minh Duc of Cau Giay District took his motorbike to fill petrol. He wanted to avoid scrounging for fuel the next morning and being late for work. But after going to several gas stations near his house, he could not find himself a spot to get petrol as there had been too many people that have waited in line before him. He said, “Then I waited at a gas station on Nguyen Phong Sac Street, but after 15 minutes, there was still no sign I could buy gas and so I decided to go to another larger one.” It took until 10 p.m. to fill his motorbike. All three gas stations on Hoang Quoc Viet Street in Cau Giay were packed with motorcyclists. At 10 p.m. many places in Cau Giay, Dong Da and Thanh Xuan districts remained crowded with motorbikes queuing up to buy fuel. Among them was Hang, who had been waiting at a gas station on Lang Street in Dong Da for almost 15 minutes but said she could not take the risk of trying elsewhere since her motorbike was very low on gas. The manager of a gas station on Tran Phu Street said in the last three days three times the normal amount of fuel had been sold. Usually, people do not come to buy gas soon after prices are adjusted upward, but it was different on Tuesday night when such crowds poured in that staff could not even take a short break. On Tuesday afternoon gasoline prices were hiked for the first time in nearly three months after nine consecutive cuts as retailers repeatedly complained that the low prices caused them losses. RON95 gasoline costs VND22,000 ($0.92) a liter, the same level as in December last year, biofuel E5 RON92 prices are up 2.7% to VND21,290 and diesel prices have gone up by 8.8% to VND24,160. An employee at station No.23 belonging to Petrolimex’s Ha Son Binh company in Ha Dong District said his gas station had been crowded since afternoon, with people even bringing along bottles to fill. On Monday 121 fuel stations in Ho Chi Minh City were out of stocks, while many in other southern localities like Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc, Kien Giang, and An Giang provinces also reported shortages. People walking their motorbikes and scooters after being unable to buy fuel was a common sight. Retailers said the government’s retail price cuts force them to sell at a loss, and fuel firms claimed small gas stations lose VND100-300 million (US$4,166-12,500) a day and large ones lose VND500 million due to low commissions and might have to close down if things do not improve this week. But insiders said the price hikes have not increased the commissions’ distributors give retailers. A retailer in Hanoi, who asked not to be identified, said he owns two gas stations and was informed after the price adjustment that he would get a commission of VN120-150 per liter of gasoline and nothing for diesel. This means retailers would continue to suffer losses since the commission could not cover overheads, he said. His gas stations continue to face a supply shortage, he said. He had ordered stocks Tuesday afternoon but that night he was still waiting for supply at warehouses, he said. “Our stocks are only enough for until early tomorrow, and if we cannot get more tonight we will have nothing to sell tomorrow.” Nguyen Thi Ngoc, the owner of three gas stations on Chuong My Street in Hanoi, said she is in the same situation after her distributor said Tuesday night there is no fuel to supply while her stocks are limited. “The distributor said it will take at least three more days for supply to stabilize.” The Ministry of Industry and Trade said however that the gasoline shortage is not widespread and only 100 out of the 17,000 gas stations in the country are running short. Recently 36 retailers in HCMC complained about “problematic” management of fuel retail prices by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Finance, saying they were kept so low that businesses were losing money on every liter of gasoline sold. The ministry is expected to hold a meeting with distributors on Wednesday. Long queues form at Hanoi gas stations as fuel shortage fears persist
